This place is for the adventurous, accessible through Sumatra’s
inland wilderness, crossing rivers and going over steep hills. The area
lies south of the Mount Leuser National Park, a rehabilitation center
for orangutans in Bahorok, which was inaugurated in 1973. Orangutans
living here are of Sumatra and Kalimantan origin.
Bohorok Orangutan Rehabilitation Station offers a virtually
guaranteed sighting of young and mature orangutans. These orangutans
are taught how to survive before they are release into the remote areas
of Mount Leuser National Park. The eastern fringes of the park can be
visited from Brastagi, but for naturalists and trekker, the best entry
point is the town of Kutacane.
