Kuala Baru is different from most places and it is well worth a visit. It is isolated, traditional and beautiful. Kuala Baru is located on a narrow strip of land between a huge beach at the ocean and the swamps with its black mysterious water. The only ways to reach Kuala Baru is by river canoes from Singkil, by boat in through a river mouth nearby, or walking for 25 hours from Kedai Trumon in the north. This isolation has preserved traditional lifestyle and values, best seen in the handicrafts produced here. Kuala Baru is famous for its embroidery.
Besides experience the traditional culture, one can also glide around in the swamps or make a beach trek.
The locals are very happy to see visitors, but you need to respect their way of life, which is not difficult. Muslim rules do not apply for non-Muslims but a bit of respect when you are in the villages make people happy. Don’t use shorts that end above the knees, use a t-shirt instead of a singlet. For girls, use a T-shirt in order to cover your shoulders. Cover the legs above the knees. A good idea is to use a sarong, the Indonesian wrap-around. If you go swimming, walk north along the beach. You gain in privacy, the beach is better, and the locals don't get shocked.

For most visitors Singkil is just a transit place on the way to Pulau Banyak. The first impression one gets when entering Singkil is not the best, partly due to the Nias Earthquake in early 2005. Many buildings were destroyed and parts of Singkil just disappeared into the ocean. First time that happened was in 1935. Singkil was then located on the other side of the river. The people moved over to the present side near the Alas River. The river has been very important for Singkil. Not until later years it has lost its importance for the people of Singkil. Singkil got connected by road to the other Sumatra in the early 1990ies. Before one had to go there by river boat Around the turn of the Millennium Singkil became the center for a newly formed regency; Aceh Singkil. New government building started to grow up, but further away near the sea where a new harbor was built. This new part "Pulo Sarok" is the boring part of Singkil. If you have time, visit the old part, called "Pasar". It has a nice atmosphere, traditional wooden buildings and the life along the river is very lively.

Imogiri (also Imagiri) is a royal graveyard complex in Yogyakarta, in south-central Java, Indonesia, as well as a modern village located near the graveyard in Bantul regency. Imogiri is a traditional resting place for the royalty of central Java, including many rulers of the Sultanate of Mataram and of the current houses of Surakarta and Yogyakarta Sultanate. The name Imagiri is derived from Sanskrit Himagiri, which means 'mountain of snow'. The latter is another name for Himalaya.
Role and importance
The Royal Graveyard that preceded was Kota Gede. The graveyard was constructed by Sultan Agung of Mataram in the later years of his reign, probably in the 1640s. The graveyard is a significant pilgrimage ziarah site, particularly on significant dates in the Javanese calendar (such as Satu Suro, New Year's Day), and the Islamic calendar.
It also belongs to a larger network of significant locations in Javanese pilgrimage traditions. It is possibly the only major location remaining in Java where the Palaces of Surakarta and Yogyakarta have personnel manning a jointly administered royal graveyard.
Among the site's most prominent graves are that of early Mataram ruler Sultan Agung of Mataram, and Sultan of Yogyakarta Hamengkubuwono IX, a leader during Indonesia's war for independence. The most recent is that of Pakubuwana XII of Surakarta who was buried in 2004.
