penglipuran.jpgIf do you want to find the unique of Bali with far away from modernization influence, pure original Balinese culture, pure Balinese architecture, visit the Penglipuran village. It is a genuine Balinese village. Located in Kubu village in Bangli district nearby the street connected to Kintamani. Very unique culture characteristic they have, traditional countryside with a cool atmosphere because 700 meters above the sea level and surrounding by 75 hectare bamboo forest.

Penglipuran village is well known for its tidy row of traditional Balinese entrance gates and its unique architectural traditions. The words Penglipuran’ was drive from the words “Pengeling Pura” means a holy place for remembering their ancestors. It is reasonable since their ancestors came from Bayung Gedevillage, still In Kintamani district. Since from Bayung Gede to Penglipuran is quite along distance there fore the people of Penglipuran, established the same temple as the temple In Bayung Gede.

Another opinion stated that Penglipuran is derived from the word “Penglipuran” means relaxation since on the royal period this place was a good spot for resting. This village has cultural potency, which is up to the present time still well preserved in the form of traditional Balinese buildings; which differentiate this village from other. The population is 743 person, most of them are farmers and just few as civil servants. The houses exist in this countryside from north to the south is look very beautiful in particular the Balinese traditional entrance gate which are made similar each other. When we step down to this village, we will meet the Balinese houses are oriented northeastwards to Mount Agung, which is located in north east of Bali Island.

The structure of house building between one house and others are equal in particular to condition, form, size and function from the building except building of family bedroom is freeform. The family temple building is places the same direction to the Agung Mount, kitchen is located in upstate from the lawn and the building of Bale Sakaenem is the six beamed building which its function for ceremony place. The place for look after the livestock and the place to plant assorted vegetable are referred as non irrigated dry field, which is called Teba. Its Construction material is made from wood except family residence. It is predominated by substance from bamboo because around this countryside is bamboo producer.

The countryside is lead by a leader, which is Bendesa or Kelian or Penyarikan or Patengan and he/she assisted by Sinoman. The social system is recognized by the 12 group terms that are number 1 until 12 as member of Pemerincik that is commissioned member converse the problem or plan and its result is submitted to the member. They are very trusting of 12 groups and have represented the tradition in heritage away back. The Consanguinity System in this countryside is Patrilinialsystem that is according to father lineage. This countryside religion leader is called as Jero Bayan, which is consisted of 3 Jero Bayans that is a Jero Bayan Mucuk and 2 people of Jero BayanNyoman. We can make conclusion from this matter that the people of Penglipuran is still remembering their origin.

Dances and handicrafts are well developed in this remote village. Members of the “Desa Adat” village institution have played a consistent role from generation to generation in this preservation since they have a strong commitment to the system of “ayahan desa” – a philosophy committed to respecting the land on which the village stands. A portion of the “desa adat” are known as “krama pengarep”, or privileged members. Each of them is given an eight-acre house yard, 40-acres of agricultural land, 70-acres of bamboo forest, 60-acres of riverside irrigation, and 25-acres of rice field.

One of the best things about this village compare with the other village in Bali is that the front houses shapes are lookalike from the edge of the main village until downstream of village. The houses are order properly that the main area is located in a higher place and keep on decreasing until the downstream area. Despite of their same shape of physical look they also use the same materials in making the houses. For example they use the soil to color the wall and for the roof made from “Penyengker” and bamboo for all houses in the village. The residential areas of Penglipuran Village have a very particular look that is unique to the area and extremely aesthetically pleasing with rows of very small but tall traditionally built houses that are very decorative and with thatched roofs. These roads are straight and within the field areas meaning there is a tropical country feels as well as being very culturally interesting. All of these roads are in line with the direction of the mountAgung, which are the most holy peak and one of the most holy places on the entire island. This gives a lovely effect and also extenuates the impressive grandeur of Bali’s largest peak. These cobbled roads sharing their direction with the family temples that can be found in the gardens also facing mount Agung as with the rest of the island the mountain is very important to the culture.

One tradition of Village rule still respected here, the villagers are forbidden to have more then one wife. The villagers that have more then one wife will be banned from the village and will not allow entering the temple. Wow very great unique tradition.
